The Commune box

The vision for Commune is a physical box you own at home. That vision is now running on my shelf.

Thoth is a 2018 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode. Next to it sits a Beelink mini PC running Docker services. Connected over Tailscale. The whole setup costs maybe $75 a month. It handles morning briefs, signal scouts, community automation, git mirrors, and media serving.

This is what Data sovereignty for individuals looks like in practice. My agents run on my hardware. My data stays on my shelf. No constant pinging to cloud providers. When compute improves, I pull in the update. Nobody raises prices on me.

I want to help people get here too (Build in Public). You shouldn’t need to rely on any cloud company to run your wiki, analyze your notes, or make money from your work. Local-First Software means AI runs locally. Owning your data infrastructure eliminates the need for specialized middleware and roles means fewer bills, fewer dependencies.

The way in is still Main Branch. Learn the reference file system, build your skills, use cloud if you want. But as your needs grow, the box becomes more economical. One-time investment, not monthly rent.

AI shapes voice dumps into atomic notes works because capture happens locally. Private AI outperforms cloud AI because all context stays on the box. No data mining. No optimization for engagement.
